Navigating Chronic Depression and Emptiness

Depression is rarely just about feeling “sad.” For many of the people I work with, it feels more like a profound sense of emptiness, a heavy lack of purpose, or an exhausting cycle of high achievement followed by severe burnout.

You might be doing everything right on paper, but most days you still feel completely drained. When depression lingers or standard therapy hasn’t provided lasting relief, it’s often because there are deeper, unseen dynamics draining your emotional energy.

You might be seeking help if you are experiencing:

  • A chronic feeling of emptiness, even when things in your life seem fine.

  • A harsh inner critic that demands perfection while leaving you feeling like you’re constantly falling short.

  • The heavy, isolating feeling of being deeply misunderstood or unappreciated by the people closest to you.

  • Feeling like you’re wearing a mask and trying to keep it all together for everyone else.

  • Physical changes, like shifting sleep patterns, a lack of appetite, or struggling to find the energy to get out of bed.

Moving Beyond Symptom Management

In my practice, my goal isn’t just to teach you surface-level coping skills. While we will work immediately to relieve your most painful symptoms, true healing requires a deeper look.

Traditional talk therapy or basic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) often falls short for chronic depression because it only addresses your conscious thoughts and behavior. In our work together, we will explore the ingrained emotional patterns and relational history that are keeping you stuck. By understanding the root causes of your internal pain, we can work together to help you live a life that actually feels authentic and fulfilling, rather than just tolerable.

Starting the Therapy Process

Our work starts with an initial session to figure out exactly what’s happening in your day-to-day life. If you’re dealing with a standard depressive episode, this meeting helps us map out your immediate stressors so we can start getting your baseline energy back.

But if your exhaustion is tied to years of ingrained emotional patterns or relational burnout, we won’t rush into surface-level coping skills. We’ll spend a few extra sessions making sure we fully understand the root cause of the pain.

I do not treat chronic emptiness like a temporary slump. By the end of our first few meetings, we’ll have a clear picture of what’s actually draining you, and a specific plan for how we’re going to treat it.
